釉は灰白色を帯びた白磁釉で、淡い染みや鉄点がところどころに見られます。均一な白ではなく、使われてきた文房具らしい釉の沈みがあります。小さな擦れや汚れも、白磁の肌に自然に馴染んでいます。

手に取ると伝統的な焼成技法の重みが感じられ、古代の儀礼や日常生活とのつながりを実感できます。木箱付き。

このように、様々な禅的教訓と共に描かれることも多い猿猴図ですが、本作品の猿には、教訓めいたものはないようです。おだやかな眼の日本猿が竹林でただたゆらう様が自在に描かれています。
